Shocking Absentees From the 2026 FIFA World Cup

The 2026 World Cup Football is about to start and despite increasing the number of participants to 48, several popular football nations missed to quality for the arena. Following are the list of country to miss world cup football 2026.

1)  Italy

The biggest absence heading into the 2026 World Cup is once again giant Italy. The four-time world champions will miss the tournament for a third consecutive edition i.e (2018, 2022 and 2026). Italy is a nation that won trophy at the 2006 FIFA World Cup in Germany beating France on penalty shootout.

Italy struggled during qualifying stage and was second and only secured 18 points behind Erling Haaland ‘s team Norway 24 points. However, during playoff match they failed against Bosnia and Herzegovina. Italy’s absence remains one of the most painful storylines in international football.

2)  Poland

Another biggest absence heading into the 2026 World Cup is Poland. They also struggled in qualifying stage was second and only secured 17 points behind Netherlands who secured 20 points. However, during playoff match they also failed against Sweden. 

3)   Cameroon

Though being an African nation, Cameroon has been considered the tough a d charismatic team in international football since decades. They reach quarterfinals at 1990 World Cup Football. Since then their performance declined gradually and they also missed 2018 World Cup and failed top past group stage in 2022 World Cup. Cameroon’s absence remains one of the most painful storylines for African Nation. 

4)     Nigeria

The national team of Nigeria will once again miss the World Cup 2026 aftershock defeat from  DR Congo in the African playoffs. The Super Eagles had become regular World Cup participants since the 1994 FIFA World Cup in the United States, earning global admiration because of their speed and attacking style. Three-time African champions and one of Africa’s biggest football nations, their absence is another major blow for the African Nation. 

5)      Chile

The South American country is facing the crisis and La Roja will now miss a third consecutive World Cup i.e (2018, 2022 and 2026). The disappointment feels even bigger considering the golden generation won back-to-back Copa América titles against Lionel Messi’s Argentina in 2015 and 2016.

 Chile’s greatest World Cup achievement remains the historic third-place finish at the 1962 FIFA World Cup, which the country hosted. They sit last of the table with 11 points and Argentina secured first position with 38 points.

6)     Costa Rica

The national team of Costa Rica also failed to qualify for the 2026 World Cup after a disappointing campaign under head coach Miguel Herrera. The Ticos had been one of the most competitive sides in CONCACAF over the last two decades. They sit in the third position with the 7 points and Haiti secured first position with 11 points.

 Their excellent World Cup performance came at the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil, when they shocked the world by reaching the quarterfinals and eliminating several European powers. That is why their absence will also leave an important void in the tournament.

7)     Greece

The 2004 Euro Champion also failed to qualify for the World Cup Football 2026. They sit third with the 7 points and Scotland secured first position with 13 points.

Greece struggled to compete against stronger opponents during the European qualification campaign and could not secure a playoff spot. 

8)     Denmark 

Another European giant Denmark also failed to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup after being eliminated during the UEFA qualification playoffs. Their absence is considered one of the notable surprises from Europe because Denmark had been a consistent performer in recent major tournaments, including reaching the semifinals of UEFA Euro 2020.  They sit second position with 11 points and Scotland secured first position with 13 points
