Luis Suarez is doubtful for World Cup 2014

The Liverpool and Uruguay forward Luis Suarez is set to undergo surgery on his knee as he felt some discomfort in his knee during a training session on Wednesday and is a major doubt for the World Cup.
The Liverpool star, who was voted PFA Player of the Year by his peers after scoring 31 goals in Brendan Rodgers' title-chasing side, felt some discomfort during a training session with his international team-mates on Tuesday.

Subsequent tests have shown an issue in his meniscus in his knee, and the 27-year-old will be operated on this week, with the South American side desperately hoping that he will recover in time for this summer's tournament.

Uruguay have been placed in Group D in Brazil, along with England, Italy and Costa Rica and the news will come as a boost to Roy Hodgson's men, who are scheduled to face Oscar Tabarez's side on June 14.

However, Tabarez can also call on Edinson Cavani and Diego Forlan, with the two forwards likely to spearhead the side's attack if Suarez does indeed miss out.
The Liverpool striker was injured on Wednesday and could face surgery, but the South Americans are hopeful the 27-year-old will return in time for their clash with Costa Rica.

The Uruguayan Football Association (AUF) are hopeful that Luis Suarez will recover from a knee injury in time to be ready for the World Cup.

But Roberto Pastoriza, national team secretary, has now urged caution, claiming that no decision has been taken on the best course of treatment and that they are confident he will be fit ahead of their Group D opener with Costa Rica.

He said: "According to the report I received a while ago, we are optimistic that he can go to the World Cup.

"He has a sore knee and was subjected to tests. It happened so fast, just a few hours ago. The intention was to keep everything quiet and report today through AUF accounts on social media. We found out at night because it all happened late that night."

"Suarez trained with a bit of pain and decided to have an MRI. Until a while ago, the last information I had was that they were deciding what to do. I cannot say anything else."

England and Italy make up Group D, with Roy Hodgson's men set to face Uruguay on June 19.
